A group of local Wetherby residents started to look for a twin town in Europe in the late 1980's. The brief was that the town had to be a similar size, have a bridge and river and also a market. Privas is approximately 800 miles from Wetherby in the Ardeche region of France - it's a very historic and picturesque town with a 14th century bridge, a river and a weekly market - in short, it ticked all the boxes. The official twinning contract was signed by both Mayors in 1992. Visits have taken place every 2 years since then - the French visited Wetherby in 2008 and we are due to go to Privas this year. The visits and other activities are organised by the Wetherby Twinning Association in conjunction with the French association. Recently, the WTA has organised work placements in Wetherby for students from the Lycee Vincent d'Indy in Privas (one of whom spent 6 weeks at Deighton Gates School) and is keen to encourage links with local schools. Deighton Gates is now linked with the Ecole Rene Cassin in Privas and one of their teachers visited Wetherby last year to investigate possible joint projects. The French are extremely enthusiastic about the link.
